Adopting a dog in Cheshire

  • Please continue to look at Rescues & don't use Freeads/Gumtree etc many come from Pup farms & worse (Not all) any decent breeder wouldn't be there either. I agree with keeping an open mind, I was looking for a CKCS & a Staff was the perfect Dog for me!

I have 2 staffy's, lovely friendly dogs, great with kids (usually) but very hypo and need regular excercise.
When you do decide on a breed you need to research how much excercise it will need, how much food they need and how much insurance is etc.
Good Luck with your new dog:D

    Hi again!

Another North Wales rescue prob a bit too far? because it's in the Rhyl area but I am mentioning them because I noticed when I was looking for a small dog they seemed to get a lot more smaller dogs in than other rescues I looked at. They have got a few cuties in at the moment but some might be too old for you?

  • Please don't disregard Cheshire dogs home after just one visit, they get so many dogs brought in that it's worth either going again several times or giving them a ring to see if they have any new dogs in. We did this and we got a dog that was right for us
  • Please don't buy animals from the free-ads! You have no option to return the dog if anything goes wrong, no aftercare, and may well be supporting backyard (i.e. irresponsible) breeders....

She wasn't from a breeder she was abandoned and these people had taken her in. She is perfectly healthy we have had her checked out.

I know that was the case with your dog, but lots of dodgy breeders and unscrupulous people do use the free ads, and as I said, there is no follow up, no after-care or support, and no opportunity to return the dog to them if your circumstances change etc... I am not saying it is a bad choice in every case, just not a route I would generally recommend!

A girl I know went to buy an 'Irish Staffy' pup from the classified ads... she was asked to meet the owner in a car park, and bought the dog - she now has a pup which has been quite poorly (unbeknown to her, it came with skin infections, stomach troubles, an eye infection etc), has cost her a fortune in vets bills, and it also looks very, very much like a pitbull... so could be siezed and PTS under the DDA...
  • Can I also echo what Foreign Correspondent has said and also can highly recommend Phoenix Dog Rescue based in Widnes/Warrington

Also Liverpool RSPCA based in Halewood have a HUGE variety of dogs in Daily

Please dont go down the freeads route (one of mine came from free ads and as much as I love her she has many many problems that having rescue back up would have really helped with)

Yes, I would avoid free-ads too - you have absolutely no come back and it does encourage the worst kind of dog breeding.

Lurcher Link have some whippet puppies at the moment who I don't think will get too big - they also have fostered dogs who have lived in homes so you get more background about the dog. Greyhound Gap also have dogs who are in foster so can tell you which ones are cat and kid friendly.

They would need to home-check you but as long as they have a suitable dog then as smaller rescues they really do put a lot of work in to match the right family to the right dog.

You can google Lurcher Link and GG - they are smaller rescues and they rehome all over the country, have an on-line forum and provide full rescue back-up and advice. I got the most wonderful dog through them, and have always been able to go back and ask anything and got so much support.

I am a big fan of lurchers and greyhounds - you can get cat friendly ones and smaller ones too - but you really need to find the breed that is right for your family - do your research and enjoy choosing!
  • Look at NCAR this is a lovely animal rescue in north Wales, it's only small, but they have so many lovely animals wanting homes!
They really care about there animals, they do a pre home visit to check that the garden is secure, the animals comes away neutered, microchipped and vaccinated and wormed (all this costs a lot at the vets) All for an adoption donation of around £120 which is very reasonable concidering a !!!!! spey can cost way over £130+
alone!! - I recommend this place it's so nice, the staff really care about the animals and give them the best possible care - i would recommend anyone to get a rescue pet as they are so loving and are usually the most affectionate pets of all!!
Please don't get pets from free ads as this incourages people to sell them in this way - and you don't know what you are getting and no come back if all fails!! Always adopt from a rescue and remember you are helping a charity at the same time!!
Visit NCAR today - google NCAR and you will find their site it's the first on the list! (i'm a new user so can't add links sorry!!) There are so many other ways you can help this rescue - take a look beleive me you won't look back!!

i think this one wants people whose children are over 5, but just in-case anyone else is looking for a dog in that area.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

I've got ADHD. You can ask me about it but I may not remember to answer...
