My brother has a Western Digital 80gb external hard Disc (WD800BEVE) He has replaced his laptop and is trying to connect this drive on his new laptop via usb.
He has lost the CD that came with the disc . I have googled and googled to try and find a free driver for this but can only find generic ones that don't make much sense. (If they don't tell me they are for that make and model then I am a bit clueless
)
Can anyone help with a 'safe' site and point me in the direction of the driver I may need
Thanks in anticipation

USb devices like external HDD dont need drivers unless he is using Windows 95,98 or ME. It should work just by plugging in0

Thanks sco0ter - no he is using Vista. I have tried plugging it into my laptop (XP) and it found new hardware, went off and got drivers from somewhere but the drive wasn't recognised in 'my computer' so I couldn't see it
That's why I thought it must need it's own driver (which my brother says it had but he can't find!) It's easier to get forgiveness than to ask permission

could be that it has been allocated the wrong drive letter:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsvista/ht/chdrlettervista.htm
I would also check that it is formated

Thanks cmatt, it is definately formatted as it has his 10,000 strong ITunes library on it

You could try the following uon your XP machine with the external hard drive plugged in (things may be in slightly different places in Vista)-
Start
Control Panel
Select Category View (if in classic)
Performance and Maintenance
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Disk Management (from left hand column)
You should then be able to see all the drives and partitions connected to your system in a table and if you can see the external drive on the listright clicking on its icon should bring up a menu with options to rename, format, etc. that particular drive.0 -
thanks quietishone. I tried that but it only picks up my c drive

have you updated vista as there were a few issues with WD HDD drivers in the early days of vista and prehaps that may solve your problem or alternatively have you looked at this site http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en0

Thanks unhappyvirgincustomer (love the name lol). I tried that site and got the following options when I searched on the model number
Select the software to download:
•Acronis True Image WD Edition
•Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (Floppy)
•Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)
•Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows
Would the top one be the driver then??
