Do we need to move our Gas meter
Hi,
We are planning to have a conservatory built, but on the external wall is our gas meter, we are hoping to create a cupboard inside the conservatory for it. There is also a possibility that the gas supply pipe to the house would run under it (possibility as we don't know where the gas supply pipe is!)
Does anyone know if this would be a problem with British Gas? We obviously want to avoid moving it if possible, as I am guessing it will be expensive to relocate.
Thanks

The meter will almost certainly need to be moved. Where in the country do you live and I can let you know who to contact to have the meter moved.0

Why would it need to be moved? Millions of homes have an internal gas meter that can only be accessed by the householder letting the meter reader in
Gas supply pipes run under many concrete drives and paths [mine does for instance]
The only possible problem I can think of is conservatory foundations and depth of supply pipe, but from my observations round here, where gas co is repalcing mains in roads, the house suplly seem deep enough, only your builder could say how deep the foundations would need to beEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
You can't build a structure on top of a gas main or service pipe. Any architect or conservatory building company will advise you of this.
There is no issue with the gas meter being located inside the property, its the risk that if the service pipe ever leaked then it would leak into the foundations of the overbuild.
Granted many homes in the country have both the gas meter located inside the property and the gas service entering the property from below ground but this in now longer allowed in the case of extensions and conservatories.
National Grid may not be the company responsible for the alteration to domestic service pipes in area in which the OP lives.0 -

If the OP's user name is anything to go by, I suspect SGN can arrange it.
