Wii wont read discs

Hi guys im hoping for some advice
We have a nintendo wii which is about 2~2 1/2 years old, well when they first came out i cant remember exactly and its worked fine till today
I turned it on and put the disc in the right way and the main screen came on so i clicked on the game menu and all i get is a black screen with an error message saying cannot read disc please refer to manual or something along them lines
Ive looked on net and some say to get a dvd cleaner and try that so i going to get one tomorrow and prey it works
Is there anything else I can do?
Really cannot afford to send it to nintendo or buy another at this moment in time and the kids are devastated

If you don`t get any luck with a dvd cleaner , get in touch with this chap http://www.microshack.co.uk/main.html

I`ve used him for a long time and he is very good, Dont` send it to Nintendo Please !!
  • No im not sending it to nintendo,
Just on principle somewhere will do it cheaper, I minght try the link, thanks
  • I agree if this is chargeable repair Nintendo may not be the best place to send this console back to. Also note you probably would not go back to nintendo as most H/W manufactures out source their H/W repairs to other repair companies.

Its always worth calling Nintendo or the H/W manufacturer, there may have been an issue with that type of drive which means they can extended the warranty.

I had a similar issue on a 2 year old Xbox 360, even though i knew it was out of warranty I called them anyway turned out they repaired it under warranty. No harm in asking!
