Cannot apply for Tax disk online, Visit to Postoffice?

Hi
Brought a car today from auction and want to tax the car as I would like to drive asap.
The auction company gave me the small green slip on the log book as receipt as I am the new owner, the Insurance and MOT I have also today.
Hit a problem though with the DVLA website to apply for a tax disk, it mentioned that if I have the green slip, its not enough for me to apply for a tax disk. I need to wait for the proper log book to arrive.
Does this mean I cant apply online till the log registered in my name arrives? that is a pain, would I be able to get it done quicker if I made a visit to the postoffice? what would I need to take with me, I assume the green slip, but would I need to wait for the insurance details to arrive through the post as well?
With just registering the insurance to start from today and sorting the MOT, would i be able to drive it or am I risking hitting hot water if I get stopped?
If anyone could advise me on how quickly I could get this turned around, it would be most appreciated.
thanks

You have to go to the Post Office. Otherwise if you did it onmline you would send the disc to the previous registered keeper.
You'll need the green slip, current MOT and valid insurance. Plus playment.0
