Being ripped off by insurance company??

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some advice regarding an Insurance policy I took out just under 4 years ago. I purchased a 42" Samsung Plasma TV (PS42S5HX/XEU) from Comet priced at £1994.95 in October 2005, on top of this I paid £499 for an additional 4 year Insurance policy due to expire late 2010. Well, I have recently had some pixels drop from the screen which is covered, however I am offered a like for like product valued at approx £599...is there anything I can do to get a decent payout in order to go back to Comet and pick my own TV, something a tad closer to the original price I paid??

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks x

I could be wrong here, but it is the product that is insured, and not the money or the value of the product.

They are willing to replace it like for like (I would try and get one with a free 5 year warranty though :) ) I feel they are well within their rights, providing it is the same manufacturer and at least the same spec.
  • I would have thought that getting a like for like TV was a good deal. No doubt the insurance company bore in mind the downward trend in TV prices when the set the premiums. I would have thought the only thing you could negotiate with them was a new policy for the new TV

Car extended warrenty are the same unless you get the more expensive price topup insurance where your car will be worth the same as you paid for it while the policy runs. But your getting a new TV of same type if it doesn't exist most can offer the closes same or better but never less. Model numbers mean Jack. I found that out when my Samsung went out last year they replaced it with a model number 1 up from the original only to notice the sound stank and the TV was a HD convert compatable not HD ready like the original and also an audio coding was missing too. Told them and they replaced it with the right model number 2 weeks later when they could get the right model ordered, least they let me use the other till then.
