P4 cpu upgrade -performance increase ??

I've just upgraded couple of things on my old Pc, added 1Gb of ram & another hard disk.

Pc has a P4 2GHz/256Kb cache cpu, now after upgrade with 1.5GB ram.
The ram upgrade has made a noticable performance difference on my old Pc.

Checking my motherboard spec. (MS-6507 ver. 2) on manufacturers site, I think it will take a 2.4Ghz/512Kb cache P4 cpu upgrade.

On ebay I can probably get that cpu cheap.

I think the 0.4Ghz cpu speed increase won't make too much difference, but doubling to 512Kb cache might be worthwhile.

Any comments ??

Will that Cpu upgrade make a noticable difference in performance & by how much ??

If you go for it make sure you get one with a 400MHz FSB rather than 533 or 800MHz - it looks like 400 is as high as it'll take.

You may also need to apply some new thermal grease to the new CPU before you put the cooler back on.

To expand on Ahar's comment - make sure the CPU works with your motherboard first. Some motherboards are choosy - like dell ones.

Personally, I do not believe you are going about it the right way. One thing to be aware on is old legacy hardware like memory for dells - To upgrade my old 1.7GHz pc to 2G ram would have cost me more than a new 2.8Ghz + 2G normal ram

i came ot the same conclusion with my 'old' AMD mobo set up
the price of DDR ram vs DDR2 made it a better move to sell the mobo/CPU/RAM to buy a mobo that supports DDR2 RAM
