Egg - impossible to invest!

Sometime over a week ago I tried to invest with Egg as per the MSE savings listing. I applied online. Their user interface refused to save some of my details but appeared to open an account. I tried to transfer money into it and it appeared to succeed - but actually it then claimed that I did not have an account. So I tried to log in again. This time it accepted me but repeatedly told me that I did not have an account - after claiming that I had successully transferred money into this account.
I repeatedly sent Egg 'secure' online messages but they simply did not respond for a week! I then got silly replies telling me that I had to wait before an account could be opened, and listed paperwork that needed to be returned. I had actually returned this paperwork but it made no difference. Over a week later they claim that I have no account and that ..... I am sure you get the picture.
Today I tried ringing them....
Well I hung up after waiting 30 minutes listening to the same cycle of recorded messages.
Does saving have to be this hard?

If you are that impatient yes.....

If you are a new customer it can take a couple of weeks for Egg to get the right indentity documents before allowing you to have an account with them.

It took me around 2-3 weeks when I first opened my account.
  • 2-3 weeks sounds about right. It took 3 weeks for ING to open my Savings account.

Well I was 16 at the time and wasn't on electoral roll so they needed proof of identity for me, which is why it took longer than usual.
  • I had the same problem because my address is a flat, believe me it took a lot longer than 2 weeks with all the repeated sending of the same documents. They seem to be run entirely by computers so you can't speak to anyone.

The interest rate is good though once you've got money in it.
  • I have the same problem with Egg. I applied online 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for Egg to write to me asking for the identity information. I have spoken to them by phone and was very unimpressed with their responses. But I want the best available interest rates for my savings so I shall persevere. By the way I also live in a flat and I suspect that inconsistencies with the way the address is recorded is causing problems with their initial identity checks. I quoted my postcode on the phone to Egg and they really struggled to match it to my address. ''Computer says no......''
