I used to do car boot sales now and then, Avon and internet auction sites.

(re Ann Summers, if it was the 'personal' stuff it breaches their adult content rules, but you can sell them on QXL okay, they have an 18+ section... so I've heard!)

I have a second job - I work Monday- Friday in my "regular" job, but I have worked every weekend this year except for three (F-I-Ls b'day, Mother's Day, Easter) and am raking in the cash and using it wisely - so far have paid in full for a fence for the garden (necessity, as old neighbour died and we had no boundary between us - at her request when we originally bought our house three years ago - she hated feeling shut out/in!) and we wanted a proper boundary set up before house was sold to new people - we wanted privacy, and thought it would look odd if we put it up after we knew who would be living next door, so arranged for it to be put up as soon as elderly neighbour died and we knew house would be put on market. This would have had to be done, so saved digging into bank account/putting it on credit card. Also, paid for holiday in second half of May - all being paid for in cash, including spending money - nothing on credit cards...!!! (Yippee!!). The rest of the money has all been paid off our outstanding credit card debt, which is reducing at a rate better than we had ever dared hope for...

Yes, I'm very tired (and my sleep pattern is completely shot - hence I'm posting here at this time of the morning!!), and wouldn't recommend it as a long-term solution (like Ms London, there are days when I feel very down about having to go to work!!) - but I am fit and healthy - and in debt!! - and there is no reason why I can't keep this up for a few months - the ever reducing Barclaycard bill (at stupid%!!) makes it worthwhile, and I know there is light at the end of the tunnel - its not going to be forever!

I'm not meaning to sound smug here, so apologies it this is the way it comes across - this second job was not intended to last as long as it has (and it will be coming to a natural end soon!) but has been very useful while it lasted!

I too have a second job in addition to FT work, I work a couple of evenings a week and there is some related admin to do at the weekend. I sometimes babysit too.

I did do a bit of mystery shopping the year before but found on the whole it was more hassle than it was worth, I didn't earn more than a few hundred pounds over the year and as popularity in MS work has grown the companies can afford to pay lower wages. Because most companies take you on through self-employment route there was the added hassle of completing a tax return and having to keep detailed records for the various companies I worked for even though the earnings were relatively small(and anyone who does mystery shopping on a self employed basis should take note to sort out a tax return for themself of you may be in deep doo-doo if you get found out and haven't been paying tax, even for small amounts).

I see what people mean about the benefits of a second job being marginal when tax is deducted etc, but I have found that I feel less guilty about taking my 'fun' money from my second job earnings for some reason while leaving my FT job earnings to pay off debt. But definitely each to his/her own, it sounds like everyone on here is working damn hard to pay off their debts in whichever way best suits them :)

A couple of more unusual ones I can think of.

Police line-ups (pay about £10 an hour I believe?) - also if you get picked I think you are fine. So what you could do is to commit a crime and then go to the line up as a volunteer and get away scot free? :p

Still life modelling - a friend of mine used to do this and get paid loads by an art college. Have to be happy with "artful" modelling though.

Cannot think of anything else at the moment

I'm thinking about doing a garage or yard sale with my friend. Has anyone done this?

I have done Ebaying, Car boots, Amazon, Babysitting, GreenMetropolis books and tested some toiletries for a cosmetic company earning a £2.00 Boots voucher for each item tested.

I've got loads of items to list on Ebay at the moment.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

    one life, live it!
  • Selling ebooks that I've written. I set up a website to sell them & have turned over £50K in 18 months at 75% GM. I'm now debt free & have cash in the bank (which will shortly be making its way to the taxman  ).

I'm now thinking of writing a free ebook telling people how to write & sell ebooks!

I'm also thinking of converting some of my ebooks into paper books - I think a lot of people are put off & would prefer paper, & it also means I can sell them through Amazon, specialist shops/ websites, etc too if I put an ISBN no on them.

More sales outlets = more sales! (hopefully)
  • I make extra money by following the savings ideas on this site, selling on ebay, and mystery shopping where I get paid to do the actual shop and get to keep what I had to buy and use these to pass on as pressies:D

Hi Piglet. You dont sound smug at all!! The money definately comes in handy doesnt it? I suppose it was different when I was in debt as I really didnt have much choice about doing 2 jobs, now I do, although between now and when I leave I can earn £720 from my second job, and converting that £720 into ASD makes it all the worthwhile!! It still sucks though, but I would like to think that that's it for 2nd jobs now - no more!!! Keep up the good work piglet.xx
