Charity appeals

I've been giving to Oxfam for years. When I started, their admon costs were 4% i.e. 4p in the £1.
According to the Moneybox live program (BBC link in posting above), Chris Coe, from Oxfam, stated their admin costs are only 3%.
Cathy Pharaoh of Charities Aid Foundation, stated 13% to 14% was the average to spend on admin.
At the end of the day, you can't expect everyone to work for charities for nothing. Those who are paid are usually on the low end of the average wage for their job anyway.
Other things incur costs which would be considered admin too. I pay £5 a month by standing order. That costs them a small amount in bank fees, etc. But they are guaranteed that money every month.0 -
Having celebs involved in charity appeals is a good idea, I think.
Yes, they can appear to be stingy when you consider their earnings and how little money they appear to be donating.
If I wrote a book and it went on sale, if my photo was on the front page of a tabloid paper, no one would be the slightest bit interested and sales would be pitifull. Celeb faces are on the front pages of books, magazines and newspapers because they are guaranteed to increase sales. So, if a celeb helps to raise the profile and subsequently raise the funds of a charity............it gets my vote.
I have the highest regard for Sir Bob Geldof and others who take the time to promote charities.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
my cousin is manager for a charity shop (not oxfam). she gets paid, i think she's the only paid staff there, but it's below what she'd get if she worked a minimum wage job for 37 hours per week. she had to go on a training course, and she also said that everyone on the training course had a degree, she thought it was one of the criteria for being a shop manager. how many graduates do you know that work for only 7 thousand a year?!
oxfam's charity shops will have higher overheads than their appeals etc. the shops have to pay rent, council tax, heating and lighting and water bills etc. and will also have admin costs for arranging the range of fairtrade goods, all the new goods such as gift sets, candles etc. whereas their charity appeals will probably give almost the entire amount raised to the cause. if the amount spent on admin for each type of fundraising was averaged out i don't think it would be a very high percentage.52% tight0 -
how many hours does she work tho?0

Totally agree with you Poppy.
We watched a thing on VH1 the other day called the "Fabulous top 40". It was basically all the expensive things that celebs buy themselves, like trainers encrused with diamonds, expensive watches, hamburgers etc etc etc.
These things cost thousands of dollars - ridiculous amounts when this money could be used to help charity.
I have nothing against people having money, especially if they've worked hard for it, but people in such priveldged surroundings should be more willing to give their cash to charities.
I also thing the countries should help themselves too. For instance the AIDS crisis in Africa - these people need to reeducate themselves and learn to use condoms etc to reduce the risk of HIV and lessen the population so they dont all starve.0 -
I do feel that footballers and celeb's come in for a lot of with regards to charity donations. £1 million pounds is a lot of money in anyone'e eyes. Its ok to say they earn £x pounds a week but how many of you can honestly say you have donated a weeks wages to the appeal??0
