Help wanted re Atlanta!

Hi Contemplating a brief visit to Atlanta next February en route to somewhere else in the US.

Main reason trip to the zoo (daughter Panda mad and one of few zoos that have them).

Anyway hope to fly in and go to hotel, then go to zoo next day stay second night and fly out first thing next day.
Will it be best to stay near zoo?? If so any recommendations for cheap clean accommodation? Or should we stay near airport?? Wanted to save money by not hiring car and walking to zoo if possible plus there will be 6 of us going, 3 generations!

Any help appreciated as have never been to Atlanta.

Transport for airport and around town is excellent since the olympics were held there. They have a metro system - altho not sure if this drops you off at the zoo area. Stayed in Atlanta last Oct, and think the Zoo was a little out of town. Worth staying in town (try tripadvisor) - we stayed in a 'chain' hotel which was ok. Hotels seemed to book up fairly quickly, and were not that cheap!! Suggest also try to fit in CNN tour (1 hour), and a quick whizz round the coke museum - I enjoyed both of those.
