Can't get a business account

Options
Currently employed but slowly doing freelance work in spare time to fund the leap into self employment.

Problem is that the cheques have started coming in from the clients, but I can't seem to get a bank to accept me for business banking.

I have tried A&L who declined, RBS need the names of 3 directors however we only have 2 & were unhelpful, so I did'nt proceed any further.

I dont need any funding or overdraft, but I have a chequered history in the past.

Can anyone help me sort this out.

Just need a simple account that I can pay cheques into & have DD's set up with.

Thanks in advance.

  • Have you tried Abbey? I set up mine over the phone but I'm sole trader.

Try HSBC or Lloyds TSB. I was once in full time employment and had a business on the side and managed to set up an account with HSBC. I ceased trading in that business (I didnt have enough time to devote to it) and eventually became properly self employed doing something else - I have a business account with Lloyds TSB.

I think that maybe RBS are becoming confused - maybe they think that you are a limited company when you are in fact a sole trader.
  • Thanks for the quick replies, I have an application with Abbey at the moment, applied about 1 week ago, but nothing as yet, tried them as they have my mortgage at the moment.

Sorry Horace, did'nt mention I have set it up as a limited company.

  • Barclays Business Banking is pretty painless. Online banking, cheque book, VISA card all as standard.

If you are not a limited company, why do you have directors?? I wonder if you are misleading banks by giving them incorrect information about your business?
Have you tried the BUilding Societies? If you are trading in your own name, they would not need to know you are using the account for business.

It is a limited company with two directors, no mis-leading involved, just trying to earn a crust.

Thanks for the tip, I might give them a go, do they offer simple accounts for people with bad personal credit ?, not looking for any kind of funding etc, just somewhere to deposit.
