I think I got caught out because that seems silly to the point of being a bit self-defeating for the credit card company (who'd presumably like to make money out of a customer for both parts of the business).

Yes, once upon a time, all credit card companies made a good living this way.

If customers now use their cards exclusively for balance transfers or purchases, the card companies have only themselves to blame, IMO.

Sorry about that. Perhaps I'm just culturally mismatched...

Excuse me, what do you mean by that?
  • I mean that I'm relatively naïve compared to you guys when it comes to tricks played by credit card companies and I've also perhaps got a less jaundiced view of banks.

Therefore a situation that I regard as worthy of opprobium (or call it "moaning"if you like) is something that the established members of the forum regard as standard practice and of no significance.

So I feel a bit like an old granny expressing shock at the language used on TV.

    It's nothing personal!

Competition is intense and the card companies need to attract customers with offers and incentives, but we're just account numbers to them.

Once you realise that, you'll be able to exploit them with a clear conscience ;)

    Welcome to MSE, btw.

Yeah to say I got the wrong end of what was meant, would probably be an understatement ;-)
