Rules Re. Pay Date

When I joined my current company, I was told pay day was the last Friday of every month and we were given a cheque on that day. After a bit of persuasion we managed to get them to pay us by bacs but they don't actually transmit the payment until the last Friday of the month, meaning we don't get our pay until the following Tuesday (or Wednesday if there is a bank holiday). I used to be responsible for salary payment at my old company and am certain that if they say 'pay day' is the last Friday then it should actually be in our accounts on that day.
Can anyone confirm if I am correct or not please?

When you were paid by cheque on Friday you wouldn't have had the cash in you account on Friday either, what's changed to your disadvantage?0

It's not about the disadvantages and the reason for asking is from a contractual point of view. If you state in someone's contract that pay day is the last Friday in the month, surely that means you either have a cheque (which is a form of payment) or the wages are in your account by BACS. The current way is contrary to the contract in that the wages are transmitted but not paid on the Friday. I just want to know if there are any official rules or guidelines.0

Our salary date is 25th of the month, and that used to mean that we would have cheques in our grubby paws that day to allow us to pay them into the bank before the last day of the month.
However we now pay by BACS and aim to have payments in bank accounts on 25th.
I think we are being more generous than we used to be, whereas your employer is operating on the same terms as before, strictly speaking. I'm not saying who is right!Signature removed for peace of mind0
