Hi all,

Me and hubyy love spicy food, and a couple of times I have got carried away with an on line shop and brought a few different jars of pickled chillis - not the sliced Jalapino type, they are littler and whole.

Apart from putting them on salads and praying they don't blow our heads off - what else can you do with them???

thanks

  • I'd chop a little into casseroles, soups and tomato sauces for a bit of chilli zing. Could also try chopping and adding to the top of pizza, omlets or frying up some veg and a dollop of sour cream and guacamoli and stuffing some tortilla.

I tend to eat the pickled chillies 'as is', meaning I serve them with any meze/starter dish together with olives and gherkins. E.g. with HM hummus and pitta breads, or slices of chorizo, cheddar and oatcakes, or HM guacamole and veggies for dipping...

The ones I've tried (in jars) tend to be more vinegary than hot - there's still some heat, but less than in fresh chillies of the same size.
    Cogito, ergo sum.

    chilli relish.

I make an easy on. Chop up chillies, ginger, garlic. Stuff them into a jar, add some lime/lemon juice that has been sugared and salted.

Keeps a few months and eat with everything.

You can make chilli sauce. Onions, ginger, garlic, chillies and saute in oil gently (chilli fumes are not pleasant) and a can of tomatoes and 2 tbsp of tomato puree. salt and whizz.

Or just dry them and grind them up so you can use a littlle bit of them.

no, you can only preserve them once. If they are pickled you just leave them.

    That's what I thought...

But it was suggested as a use for them so thought I might have got it wrong?
  • I have a huge jar of the little blighters picked up from some £1 shop or similar somewhere in the mists of time.. it is taking up space in my cupboard and is basically more chillis than i will probably ever eat..(I normally use fresh chillis that i buy on whoopsie and freeze) so any ideas for using them up?? are there any recipes that call for them in any sort of quantity??

could i remake them into a different thing.. like a have a mango and some eating apples.. so maybe some sort of chilli/mango chutney hybrid??

Are these the super-charged mega-hot red chilies we are talking about, or the long green-ish ones that are sometimes served at kebab houses?

If the former, just share them out with family and friends if you are not using them all. If the latter, they are not terribly spicy and are very good eaten alongside chips, or in pitta with salad and hummus.

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • they are the hot ones, red and green.. i find them a bit tough TBH... im thinking of chucking them....
