Could anyone recommend a good quality black worktop. I was looking at granite but is too expensive unfortunately. I would like a deep black not black/grey.
Thank You

Silestone
Corian
Zodiaq
Laminate
Apollo
In that order...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Silestone and laminate are the most hard wearing worktops you can get.
Corian and Apollo are quite easy to scratch, where as Zodiaq can stain quite easily...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Laminate worktops will scratch - you’re mad to go for Gloss laminate and some refuse to sell it. Your requirement for black doesn’t help either – as black laminate shows the scratches easier; hence most black laminate worktops having “fleck” to help with this (hide scratches) and it’s a nice effect and style too. Axiom do a black black laminate without patterns that you seem to favour. Bushboard have a range called Prima with some nice blacks and mixed darker colours (and have 3m and 4m worktops with 2m and 4m breakfast bars to utilise the lack of wastage well). Axiom have a nice surface texture called Honed that seems popular and with the pits it has the scratches are not so visible. If your careful your OK - Use cutting boards…
Acrylic worktops will scratch but your doing well if you do sctacth them as they are very tough. Laminate is rendered useless and hard to hide a scratch once damaged but Acrylic can be sanded down and the scratch effectively removed. The plus point with this is that you can polish the worktops when you come to sell the house and make them like new, or just to liven them up again. Also, joints are inconspicuous due to the method of jointing and almost invisible – You need a solid surface fitter to acrylic but “any” carpenter can fit laminate so the cost of Acrylic fitting it a little more. I personally favour Bushboard Encore for balance, durability and cost but it has to be said that any worktop will stain – but, you can sand Acrylic out, then polish.
A laminate worktop will be in the order of £125inc VAT, but an Acrylic will be £450inc VAT and you need about £60-£80 of accessories for the fitter – and Acrylic needs a solid surface fitter.0 -
Of course laminate worktops WILL scratch. ANY worktop will, they are just less prone than the other surfaces (excluding Silestone) Obviously, everyone should avoid gloss laminate worktops as they are a disaster waiting to happen.
I would chose Duropal over Axiom or Bushboard though. Oh and 125 quid for a 4.1m laminate worktops is too much. Expect to pay £90 to £100 per length...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I didn't want to spend much on a worktop so bought a Duropal plain matt black laminate. It has been in place for over a year and has no marks or scratches on it at all. I have been really pleased with it.0

I can recommend the Noir Riven in the Omega range for a black gloss that has a texture so doesn't show marks and so far hasn't scratched but then I haven't had it long.
