Help - I've just done something stupid!

I've just been visited by a so-called talk-talk representative! He was from an eastern block country and his english was dreadful, when I told him I was perfectly happy with my Tiscali phone and Broadband package, he managed to persuade me to let him in too "lean" on a table,he needed to write our info down! He asked for our telephone number and postcode and said he would ring his office too see if we could get a better deal(why on earth did I fall for that!) He rang a number 080095777133 spoke to someone giving them my telephone number and postcode. When he had finished he told me that Tiscali had been very naughty and had "locked" my phone line into the exchange and we would never be able to leave Tiscali terribly sorry but it wasn't his problem. And he was gone! Have I been scammed in someway! I can't get hold of anyone until tomorrow either at Tiscali or Talktalk any ideas what I can expect to happen next! Yes I know I'm stupid but it's happened, does anyone know what I should do?

Well for starters I would ring that no. to see if it really is TalkTalk. Did he produce any ID? Did you ask him for some?
Are you saying he asked to use your phone?-I can't believe someone who worked for TT would not have their own mobile?
Sounds to me more like a someone impersonating a cold caller to try and sneak valuables etc, why else would he want to come in the house?
Otherwise I don't see how any scam can take place by giving a phone number and postcode-plenty of ways of finding that out without calling in person. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You should be ok. Sounds like he tried to scam you but after checking your details found out you are on a fully unbundled line (LLU) with Tiscali so the only company that can transfer you is BT to BT Retail. (thats why he said your locked at the exchange)
Tiscali is now owned by Talk Talk by the way.0 -
Thanks - I checked the number and it was Talktalk and it was a voice verafication number? I think he tried to swap us found out that I'm on a contract with tiscali so wasn't able to switch me - suspect the phone call had something do do with checking the line! I will go back to my normal policy of not dealing with cold-callers at all! I must have been half a sleep last night to have allowed hin across the front door? Still you live and learn!
Thanks again;)0 -
I think you mean former Eastern Bloc. There is no Bloc now, how incredibly ignorant of you and rather offensive too.
Either way I bet he's a lot smarter than you and probably much more polite too.0 -
Wow, just look how the word 'former' totally takes out the offence.I think you mean former Eastern Bloc. I apologise if my description offended you but at the time I was in a panic - I'm sure your far too intelligent ever to panic about something! But it still doesn't alter the fact that in my opinion someone who can't speak english to a reasonable level should not be cold calling at 9pm at night (or anytime to be honest!).0

Unfortunately I didn't get the number of the hit and run driver who hit my parked car but didn't stop - but I did see the equivalent of his GB plate so I know which "former Eastern bloc" country he was from!
Now, tell me, which of us is ignorant and offensive? Or is it both of us?0 -
I had someone around earlier, had his Talk Talk ID. He was informing me of the new Government legislation in regards to free broadband across the country. Used my phone to see if it was set up yet and said it's scrambled, so it's all up and ready. I did tell him beforehand, that I'm under contract with Sky. I was a tad suspicious, so called Sky and they knew nothing. Started googling the phone number and came across this thread. I will be calling Sky back in the morning just to make sure they can't switch me. :mad:0

Aren't all Tiscali customers being offered a shift to TalkTalk as they are the new owners of Tiscali? You have the choice to refuse, but will probably then end up back with BT on a 12 month contract if you don't accept TalkTalk.0

I guess my point is..........there's something not kosher here. He explained all about the new Government regulation in regards to everyone getting free broadband. Why has it not been on the news? The only free broadband through the government is in regards to the free laptop and year internet subscription for low income families. Vat has now been added onto broadband, so why would they turn around and give it for free? Something a bit hinky here :think:0
