Applied for a A&L account just for the Visa Debit and got accepted then turned down and no they want to see my pay slips, My passport (Which I have lost), a Bank statement and more! Even though I currently pay £1,000+ in my Nat account!

I love Natwest though, they clear my cheques in 2 working days now :D and the solo aint that bad. Plus they are changing over to visa debit in a year or so. I don't want to change banks because they know my income now and If I ever do need a loan when I am 18 they will be the first to help out (Hopefully!).

I might go to lloyds to get the Visa debit , handy when you want to buy from America :D. But seriously Solo is being accepted everywhere now lmao

Really hate it that I lost my passport, now I take my medical card and birth certificate very were!

Oh and it is against the law to be offered a unarranged over draft to a minor!

Does Abbey give a cheque book though? lmao

HBOS gave me an electron card when I was under 18. At the time no other bank would give me anything with a DD facility. But I had no problem using it anywhere including train stations and petrol pumps, so much so I didn't bother to upgrade my account to a full blown visa debit until I was nearly 20 lol.

The whole it shouldnt let you go overdrawn is a farce though. My one and only bank charge is from an electron card and a DD they forgot to cancel. (id canceled it in branch)

It really is. Similar thing happened to me as I said, although they didn't charge me anything, just made me £250 overdrawn.

My understanding (all be it 10 years since i worked for a bank) was that an under 18 could only have a visa debit / switch card if they had a parent or guardian on their account.

The card is a form of credit and it is almost impossible to enforce credit claims for accounts going overdrawn on someone who is regarded as a "minor".

The parent or guardian on the account mostly meant the bank has some sort of redress with regards to sensible lending / claiming back overdrawn accounts.

Likewise i didn't think they allowed "minors" to have accounts where they could have DD's as this is a form of "legal contract" which would have the same issues with regards to claiming the money back.

I'm probably just out of date though.
Sensible banking is a thing of the past...

I seem to recall that they may have introduced a visa/debit card that could be "charged up" with a set amount of cash so the person could not overspend what they had (sort of electron/solo+).

I'm not sure this applies in this case though.
  • I'm 16 and just got my first visa debit card, I went for barclays young persons (16-19) as my dad banks with them so they didn't need my ID.
    I'm not 100% but isn't this offering a debit card too?http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12862
    For 11-15 year olds

Yes, I had both those accounts when I was that age and had a visa debit.
You do know you're earning 0.1% interest on that account don't you? Really better off with another account.

I know you never used to be able to get Visa Debits when you were under 18. I'll surprised if 14 year olds are allowed them (are you sure they're not Electron? The VISA Electron logo is different now, with electron written small.

I've had a Visa Debit with A&L since I was 16, before that with HSBC I had a Solo...
