Problems with connecting to the net - on broadband

Okay, I will try and make this as simple as possible.

We have just moved to a new house. Pc has been downstairs plugged in to main phone line ( via an ASDL filter for a month or so ).
This weekend we moved PC upstairs to spare bedroom but its being tempremental and only connecting as and when it wants to.

We are on Wanadoo broadband. The guy who lived here before set up an extension cable from the main socket to the upstairs room himself ( bit of a DIY freak I think ).

The line works on its own, as a telephone line and works occasionally fine for conencting to broadband. Both phone sockets have an ASDL filter but have tried numerous variations ( unplugging sky, unplugging the main phone and so forth ) but it just seems to work when it feels like it.

Downstairs it worked fine non stop - but we dont have the space to leave the PC there.
Can anyone advise on whats best ???

We would get someone out to put in a new phone socket but is that not going to cost the earth ???

Laura:confused:

First step is to gently take the upstairs socket apart to see if the wires are disconnected or broken, and just touching.

It shouldn't be too expensive to lay a new telephone cable and phone socket from downstairs -- provided it isn't under the floorboards...!

Shouldnt prove too expensive as you have the cable that runs from your main line to the extenson position.

As John says unscrew the extension box and check the connections. Depending how its wired two blues should be connected usually on terminals 2 and 5.

Also check the main box and the cabling to check none of these connections are loose.

Hopefully there is a little slack on the cable so if a connction is loose at one or both ends you can just strip it back and start again.

As you are receiving a tone on this line it does sound as though it could just be loose or bad connections and hopefully not a furry mouse chewed the cable in the middle somewhere

    Hi laura

Do you have anything else that plugs in upstairs with the PC?

Unplug everything else in the house first and then try it.
Not saying it won't be the connections, but unlikely if the phone upstairs is working OK.
Check the cable running to the PC, you haven't pulled anything while moving it upstairs?
Check if you can by moving pc downstairs again.

Try swapping the adsl filters around as well.

Best of luck, tell us how it goes.

Also worth noting the BT are currently undertaking major national works to the ADSL network.
My local exchange just upgraded to 8mb and that stopped my ADSL router from working (until I updated the software on the box). BT deny all knowledge of this however I know it to be fact since the connection speed was 512k, then 2 days later 8134k. Also I work in IT and the same problem has hit some of our shops too (Southampton, Bristol etc).

It may be unfortunate timing that you moved your PC at the same time as line changes. I'd suggest verifying that you still have a good ADSL connection downstairs at the master socket. That will confirm whether definately the other socket or not.

Then either re-do the cable to the extension socket (easy method is tie/sellotape new cable to old one and pull through!) or go wireless (good Linksys combi deal at PC world this week, £49.99).
