Printer/Scanner suggestions (must be easy to use)

An elderly friend of ours recently entered the world of computers and as such has a printer/scanner (Epson SX100).
However they're having issues with getting to grips with it so I was wondering if anyone's had experience with helping perhaps grandparents, etc. with technology, what would you suggest as an easy to use and understand printer/scanner?
I can see what they mean - the software is a bit tricky to use and alter especially when printing photos and I think this is one of the things that throws them.
I think in this case the Epson software was overly complicated especially when they wanted to print photos instead of basic A4.
Any suggestions would be great.

I got HP Laserjet J5780 All-in-one - cost me £69.99
Works a charm - from pcworld I got it free delivery I think last August.
Its printer, fax, scanner, photocopier all in one and probably could wash my pants!0 -
I use the Epson Rx685 cheap for inks if you use compatibles, its a all in one printer. It can do edge to edge printing, cd/dvd's, and also print both sides of the paper
Epsons scanners normally have software where you can set it up for advanced or just let it scan stuff automatically
I must admit though printing photos can be a pain to get right and I think its just as cheap to get them done online or through a shop like Jessops even with cheap ink and often quality is as good if not better0 -
You may just need to change the software for something that has an easier to use interface.
Search around on the internet, there's a free trial of something here http://www.hamrick.com/
Most graphics applications allow you to scan and print, may be they would find that easier to use than the Epsom software.
May be there are some free options0
