MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. How much should Nigella tip?

  • I have worked in USA, we were paid around $8 an hour but service employees in the same comapny are paid approx $1.50 per hour. This is because their wage is made from tips. This includes barmen and waitresses. Chefs are paid standard wage.

So comparing the two countries is pointless, I can also add that in Australia they very rarely tip, good service or not. I feel the UK is moving away from a tips culture and I rarely tip now at all, as the price of the food is costed to include the service and as I said above the waiting staff in the UK do not require any additional money as they will be on minimum wage as a minimum the same as many other jobs.

I also know many restaurants where the managers keep the tips rather than distribute it.

So I suggest, whether Nigella enjoyed having her food brought to her or not, she should keep her money and donate it to charity or another more needly cause.
  • She should tip 10% of the amount pre-discount, wait staff work hard enough without having to lose out like this and its still the same amount of work for them.
  • Tipping waiting staff I think is very important and very different from somone working on a till in Tesco or McDonalds staff for example.
Firstly Waiters in restaurants do much more than someone sat at a till, passing things across a scanner etc or stood passing you a burger from a station.
Waiters do a lot of running about to ensure you get everything you want, on time etc, most have to make all your drinks and desserts them selves which is time consuming and hard to prioritise what to do first when you may have 10 tables all requiring something.
Obviously the tips motivate waiters to ensure they work as hard as they can to make your meal experience as good as possible, however if no tips were given, why run around like a madman, going above and beyond to ensure you have quick, efficeint service for minimun wage, surely they would rather sit at a till, beep, beep, beep, than run around day after day, taking orders, dealing with complaints, being spoke to like  etc.

So, if you are a regular non tipper in a restaurant and always feel the service is below standard, take a look around, maybe the tippers are getting all the service!!
  • I never tip, why should I? No one ever tipped me for doing my job. If everyone stopped tipping then they would have to pay a decent wage to get staff in the first place, and if they are only going to give good service in the hope of getting extra money from people then they are in the wrong job! If I was going to tip anyone it would be a doctor/nurse/fireman/policeman who had maybe saved my life, not someone who had served me with a pizza !! Yes I know prices would go up to pay for the higher wage, but at least I would know what the price was up front and I could then decide if I wanted to eat there or not.
  • PS/ In answer to the question....Always 10% minimum..of the PRE DISCOUNTED Price!!!! IN CASH!!!!

I don't believe that 'tipping' should be standard as you don't tip everyone you receive a service from! There are many jobs that are minimum wage which received no tips at all.

Going back to the first post, they should pay in separately what they think the waiter/restaurant deserves, as there shouldn't be a standard rule.

To use a Yorkshire cliche, 'at the end of the day', the prices you pay are on the menu. You wouldn't be expected to pay more with other services.

Always 10% minimum of the Bill BEFORE discounts....In CASH!!!

The credit card tips you leave often get divided up or taken by management or at the least...Tax, NI & "Service charges" taken from them, so that £3 you leave probably halves!!

I don't care if they earn very little, they should be pushing themselves in a job that pays more. I don't want to earn minimum wage so I go out and bust a hump in my chosen profession. I suggest they do the same.

A lot of people working in restaurants are students and are trying to earn their degree to get themselves a better job.
Love the way you belittle them and say they should go get a better job that pays more. There are not that many jobs out there to be had. If we all went and got 'better' jobs, no one would bring you your food:rolleyes:
Most people i work with either have degrees (we have a bartender who is a qualified lawyer and a physics graduate waiting tables to name 2), or are working towards their degree so we can get one of these better paid jobs that are apparently out there.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

I've worked in a shop and a cafe, and I have to say they are both hard work, so why should one job get tipped and not the other not?

I used to work for a major high street shop, and you weren't allowed to keep any tips as these were donated to the store charity.

  • I absolutely detest the idea of tipping. I don't care if they earn very little, they should be pushing themselves in a job that pays more. I don't want to earn minimum wage so I go out and bust a hump in my chosen profession. I suggest they do the same.

We already pay taxes to support those doley "jobseekers" why the hell should we feel pressured into supporting people who don't earn as much as they would like. It's like benefits for those who lack ambition and drive.

How insulting! A lot of waiting staff are actually people working to support themselves during further education, or people who have taken on a second job. During my degree, most of us went out to work part time in order to support ourselves thanks to the pitiful grant system and the fact we were trying to keep the already huge student loan bill to a minimum. I didn't happen to work in a restaurant, but I know a number of people who did and I find the snap judgement concerning people and their 'choice' of job pretty rude actually.
Tipping is designed to encourage better customer service amongst the staff - the only objection I have is when it's automatically included in the bill, or doesn't make it's way into the hands of the person that served you. Surely those are the things that need to be addressed without taking it out on the poor person who busted their hump to give you a good dining experience.
