  • actually, i think this is a good idea. Not that I agree with putting tax up, but i like the idea of pricing scum off the road - me and poison ken agree with this. Lets ramp it right up. I would pay at least 6GBP a litre if it meant clear roads, with no pimped up nova/fiesta/citroen saxo etc etc on it. Lets price the scum off the road once and for all. Lets make road tax 500GBP and not having it, 8yrs in prison. Lets also make driving without insurance LIFE. There is no need for anyone to drive without insurance - unless they have a woman giving birth on the back seat.

Lets get the roads moving again for the middle class.

    Its also greener.

It's the middle class that wouldn't be able to afford it.

You appear to be forgetting benefits would go up to make sure these people you refer to are far more priveleged.

Yeah, this would have to go and hand in hand with a mass reduction of all benefits.

We're reinsuring today, now that has caused me to gulp more. .....

still trying. Cheapest quote so far is for just shy of a grand for the two cars. My little car's (we are inuring both) insurance is costing at more than 50% of his value

Blimey, you must live in a dodgy area! Insurance for my Alfa, Citroen, kit car, Ducati, Stag and scooter don't come to £1000 combined!

I'd like to reduce car use (and have, by using motorbike to commute) but the current system of car tax and annual insurance premium encourages the use of the car, as "you have already paid for it". On a low annual mileage, fuel costs make up a lower percentage of the annual running costs, so every extra mile you do becomes proportionally cheaper.

If I could pay insurance and tax for only the times I actually use the car, then I would be far more keen on finding alternative methods of transport.

No, rural southwest, low crime area, locked, off road parking. And we're putting a milage limit of 6000 mpa on the new/old LR. DH is a big factor (has only been driving four years, but has a pass plus). Only ever been a named driver (not main driver)...so no claims bonus if we change insurer is problematic. We're both 30, nothing too heinous on record (I have an unexpried sp30). OTOH< mu mother's insurance is only a couple of hundred, she's by far the least safe driver of us all!

Yeah, the lack of NCB really hits hard, not sure how much effect the SP30 has (as I never exceed the speed limit :D). And of course, not being able to shop around makes you a sitting duck as far as premium rises go.

I'm in Devon, which I would class as rural southwest, so our risk factors should be similar.

You see, we really DO feel the impacts of climate change. My anthelmintic administration routine was impossible last winter,(so late for frosts) we had significant flooding too. Feed costs through the roof, fewer hard frosts (even given those snow weeks) making the ground harder still to manage, and all the health problems the animals suffer as a result. Perhaps its geographical or perhaps because I'm out in it, directly applying it to our livestock management that I notice?
