Going up by 2p a litre in fuel duty and about 0.3p in VAT.
This is the third rise in just 9 months.
The government are no longer using the green line to raise duty, but are now saying this is needed for government investment. Fuel will rise again when VAT rises at the end of the year, so four increases in total in a year.
The AA is saying it is mad to be doing this now at a time when we are trying to exit the recession.
Basically a quid extra to fill your car. Not much, but when added up across the UK, collosal amounts of revenue. What do you think? I think it's going to be needed and this is just the start, so aint gonna get too peeved!
Seems the pound is sliding though, so increases due to currency could also occur.
What are you on about Graham didn't you know inflation is a good thing?
Just more green shoots.0 -
I too don't mind green taxes - but this is not a green tax, it's pure revenue creation for a whole host of other purposes. The Govt like taxing things we have to buy, and frequently - nice litle earner.0

I wouldn't mind green taxes, if there were any.
Can anyone name one "green tax" which actually makes you stop and think about what you are about to do, or buy?!
£10 aint really gonna stop me getting on a flight to go on holiday.
2p per litre isn't going to stop me going to work to earn a living in order to survive.
When your paying a high insurance premium and high petrol costs, a higher vehicle tax isn't going to stop you buying the car you want.
The congestion zone has stopped no one from going into London.
All these taxes are designed to be cheap enough to get you to pay them, not actually stop what you were going to do or buy.
I don't think there is one single green tax which has actually helped the environment rather than the treasury.0 -
I'm not rushing to fill my almost empty car, frankly, the trip to the petrol station would eat so significantly into any saving that its not really worth it.
Having tried very hard to stay ''green'' I feel some unease about our new to us almost vintage LR, which is going to chug through fuel, but last winter, for the first time, we really did have trouble. I don't mind the odd day of having to swim to stock, but its not really safe and its not healthy, but when its more common then it is a bit more of a problem.
Its not an ideal green tax, but it is a green tax, not just on milage but on purchases which do have green implication, so...I'm not too mad about it.
We're reinsuring today, now that has caused me to gulp more. The increase in insurance over the last decade or so has been flabbergasting. It always amazes me that ''kids nowadays'' can afford their insurance, more than the finance for their smarter cars!
BTW Graham, I do try and time my journeys into congestion charge zone: its no hassle to me (I acknowledge I'm lucky with that) and it makes me feel (smuggly and with no foundation in truth) that I got one over on ''them''. The real truth is, if I pay CG I'm still better off than if I got the train, and if two of us do it and need to pay for parking, we still have change from two train tickets.0 -

This is what this government, its mouthpiece (the BBC) and the environmentalists have done to many of the UK public. People feel GUILTY for using their cars!:rotfl: You have paid so much tax just to own a car even more when you drive it - just to live and go about your daily business. You should not feel any guilt. And the global warming arguements are so flawed.0 -

Thats because they know that people can't and won't stop travelling when most of these journeys are unavoidable. They are aware of this, this makes the 'green' tax a farce. It is purely revenue raising to the government. None of this money goes back into anything to help the environment.
For example this bank holiday weekend, the line from Euston to Birmingham is closed for engineering work. They always seem to do this on bank holiday weekends at the busiest times. And people wonder why people have to drive!0 -
I thought the roads were a lot quieter when it was 1.20 a litre - proves you can price people off the roads if you really want to - doesn't do a lot for the rest of the economy however...I think....0

It's funny you should say that!
Was only sitting in a traffic jam on the M5 the other day for ages, using fuel and going no where. When I eventually got to the hold up, it was speed cameras going up on the hard shoulder, so two lanes had been closed off leaving one lane. Sure, it was night time, around 10pm. But, it's a bank holiday, carvans and travellers galore.
Over Thursday and Friday I did near 550 miles, and was held up for stupid reasons due to roadworks, and I actually sat there and thought this is some kind of ploy. Make us all sit here, engines running, fuel being burnt, but going nowhere.
My fuel economy dropped from 53mpg over roughly 110 miles that I had already done, down to 28mpg because of the hold up. In effect, it doubled my fuel consumption for that trip.
And you have to wonder why they cut not one, but 2 lanes off to put up specs cameras on a bank holiday friday! Could there possibly be a busier time coming into the south west!?!0 -
