Change of plan..OH now wants floor tiles

We bought our bathroom tiles yesterday and OH has now decided he really wants the same ones on the floor. If we tile it, I'm putting in an underfloor heating mat too.
Our floor is only 18mm chipboard which was fine for vinyl but is no use for tiling.
So, what to do now? A new stud wall has been built over the floor so it'd be a lot of work ripping it up again. If we put 12mm/15mm ply over it, that coupled with the tiles and adhesive, would increase the floor height by at least an inch probably more.
Tile backer boards are not as thick so wouldn't raise the floor as much as ply but do they help stop any movement as ply does?
If the floor is raised, what do you do at the doorway? Do people just have a step into their bathrooms?

We had ply and tiles put over our floorboards and had a step up into the bathroom, but now we've got carpet, the carpet is almost level with the tiles and it's not at all noticeable.
Depends how much of a perfectionist you are?0
