Change of prize this week! Viewfinder comp from Observer Escape section (and really pleased I found the answer to this as it requires a bit of lateral thinking).
A Booker Prize-winning novel is partly set in this former French coloney, now a major seat of learning in this region. Its grid of tree lined boulevards reflect the Gallic influence. Backwaters to the south offer boating beaches and a botanical garden and an experimental township to the north casts a maternal spell. Name the city.
Answer - Puducherry, India (formerly known as Pondicherry if you want to include that!)
