Finding out the value

I'm new to the site, and I'm currently in the process of trying to sort out a scary amount of debt.
A few years ago I bought an old scrapbook containing a collection of newspaper cuttings. I found out that it covers quite a significant period of early twentieth century history covering many very famous events. I'm currently wondering whether this could be worth something, but given that I have absolutely no experience of antiques or collectors auctions I have no idea about what I need to do to find out. I have searched all over the internet (well, it felt like all over
), but can't seem to find anything that might help.
The only thing I really don't want to do is to have to pay to find out! We really are watching what we spend.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
