Help- EDF using debt collectors for electricity I didnt use
Got a letter from Roxburgh Debt Collection Agency, asking me to pay £470 for an EDF electricity bill, for a flat that I moved out of in November 2008. At the time of vacating the flat, the letting agents advised that all utility bills had been closed. I didn’t receive a final bill from EDF, and even if they did send something I had obviously moved out of the flat. To ensure no amount was outstanding I called up their online payment system after two months in January 2009 and checked my balance, which was about £65. I figured this must have been the outstanding amount after the account being closed and therefore paid it off immediately.
It seems the account wasn’t closed after all and EDF kept billing me all this time and perhaps sending the bills to the old flat. Eventually EDF must have passed this on to Roxburgh for collection. I now have a letter from Roxburgh saying that I need to pay or else face legal action.
As proof that I vacated the flat in November last year all I have is an email from my letting agents saying that all utility bills have been closed, additionally I have the tenancy agreement for my new flat which starts immediately after I vacated the old flat, and utility bills from my new supplier.
Folks, I need your advice, what should I do? Should I call up EDF and dispute the bill, is my case strong or am I liable for the bill even though I didn’t stay at the flat and use the electricity. OR should I follow up Roxburgh? Please advise I am petrified

You need to get in contact with EDF and get a correct final bill, you may need to send them proof such as your new tenancy agreements or a final council tax bill. Do you or the agents still have a note of the final meter readings? If so this will help.
Lesson for the future never trust your letting agents to open/close your utility accounts, always take a reading and do it yourself.0
