Linux Mint Sound problem. SOLVED

I dual boot Linux Mint Elyssa and XP Home.
I don't usually do it, but I used 'Hibernate' on Mint while I watched the Grand Prix.
When I restarted the best I could get was 900x600 60hz screen resolution and all sound had disappeared.
I've sorted the screen by using 'Try to fix X server ' from the recovery options.
I've checked all the various volume controls, no welcome sounds, no music and no sound on e.g.youtube.
All sounds in XP are working fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions to cure the problem?
p.s. please keep it as simple as possible.
Thanks R

Hi
Maybe you have checked this already, but here goes.
With Ubuntu and Gnome desktop there's an icon in the top right-hand corner, near the clock. Right-click it and select 'Open volume control'.
When the panel opens check that there isn't a red X under the Master or PCM sliders.
Here's a picture:-

Thanks, but I'd already checked, and it's identical to your screenshot.
Googling seems to point to Alsa usually being at fault, don't ask me!
I may try removing it and reinstalling via package manager.
Also I'm downloading 'Gloria' so may just reinstall tomorrow.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
'Gloria'?
You mean the song by Van the man and Them?

BTW, 8 years ago this weekend, I saw Nina Simone, Van and Peter Green one after another.
Amazing. :beer:Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Alsa is a sound driver known to be buggy, there are many fixes on the net, googles your friend.0

I'd already spent time Googling, that's how I worked out/guessed it was probably something to do with Alsa.
Well I removed Alsa and anything similar through Package manager.
Rebooted and reinstalled, still nothing, re-checked 'volume control' as batt999 suggested, found this time 'Master' was muted.
Un-muted (?) it, everything back as it should be.
Actually, now checking out M.I.A. via Rhythmbox.'Gloria'?

But then again I have a pretty wide range of musical tastes.Move along, nothing to see.0
