Car insurance for overseas visitor

My in-laws are doing a house swap with a couple from Australia for a couple of months (Dec '09 to Jan 10). My father in law is easily covered to drive the OZ couples cars on their insurance. However, his own insurance company will not insure their visitors to drive his car! Other insurance companies/ brokers don't seem to be interested or want to charge a fortune for 8 weeks insurance (£500+). Overseas visitor who will drive has been driving for 40+ years with no claims. Is there an insurance company out there who does this sort of insurance at a reasonable rate? Hope someone can help. Thanks

There are plenty of companies that would offer cover for this, they would normally need you to transfer your Insurance to them which would mean a cancellation fee from your current Insurer.

Ask some local brokers (Not Swintons or the like)

Thanks, I'll have a word with FIL and pass on your suggestions. I'm pretty certain that he has already spoken to a broker. Would the temporary insurance cover as mentioned in the insurance article be an option?

Temporary Insurance is quite expensive and will cost £100s.

You can find a local broker using this http://www.biba.org.uk/ConsumerHome.aspx

It can be cheaper to add the drivers on permanently and then delete them when they return to Australia. Mention this to the broker as they may find it works.
