Currys Coverplan question

Options
Hello all,

When buying a washing machine from Currys the sales assistant also sold me the 5 year coverplan service agreement for another £150, saying that if I didn't use the service in the 5 year period I would get a full refund.

5 years has now passed and so I thought I'd ring up for a refund. I've just taken a look at the small print and in no way does it say they give a refund if the service is unused. It does, however, say I can get a 20% discount on a new product if a buy a new 5 year coverplan.

So has the sales assistant just ripped me off, promising me with a refund whereas it looks in fact like I'm not entitled to one?

Or has anyone been successful in negotiating a refund from the Currys Coverplan if the service wasn't used?

Well, I got a full refund on Coverplan on a TV set - but that was a good few years ago and was when Currys were giving it a trial run. So far as I know, it was SO successful (Currys probably thought we would mostly forget and they wouldn't get many claims!) that they abandoned the scheme.

I would be surprised if you get a refund - but anything is worth a try especially if you have any documentary proof. If you haven't, you are probably stuffed - anyway, I seem to remember that you had to make a written claim within a very tight timescale.

I don't want to be rude (I'll leave that to the hard core on here who take every chance to rubbish other people) - but surely you should have looked at the paperwork before now? All these cashback schemes take every opportunity to wriggle out of valid claims and you are probably out of time - even if your claim is valid.

Well the sales assistant could have "ripped you off". They might even have made an honest mistake, who knows? Not everything bad that happens is part of an evil conspiracy.

Is there nothing at all written on the receipt from the shop at the time to say you'd get a refund? If there's no way of proving it then you probably don't have a very realistic chance of a refund.

  • I've been employed by DSG for 6 years and I've never seen them do this, although the trial run that tbw mentioned was probably before my time.

By comparison, you don't get a refund of your house insurance if your house doesn't burn down, do you? Otherwise insurance companies wouldn't make much money!
Any advice or opinion is only informal advice to the best of my knowledge. Just covering my back, yadda yadda.

But Household insurance isn't (mis) sold for £32,000 either ;)

I'm not defending a potential mis-sell, but it stands to reason an insurance company would be daft to offer a full refund just because a claim hadn't been made. I know some do however offer partial refunds.

A few shops used to offer a refund on product insurance, they probably made money on the intrest and you had a small window to claim so quite a few probably forgot , Scottish Power was one for sure and there was another, both have gone from the high street now tho.

I'm sure I have been offered money back if you don't claim insurance by one or more of the large electrical retailers. I never buy the extended insurances so only half listen when they give you the mandatory "would you like extra cover" speech, then say no. On at least one of these occasions the speech went on to say what have you got to lose, if you don't claim you get a refund.

Also recall an article on watchdog about the refunds and having to claim within a very small window. In this article, people were posting their refund application, only to later be told it had not been received on time or had not been received at all and placing the onus on sender to provide proof of receipt which they could not do because it had been sent via normal post. So the get out seemed to be basically playing a numbers game and losing legitimate refunds.
