rubber for removing marks from porcelain

Some time ago on these boards I read that it's possible to buy some kind of item to remove marks left on porcelain basins, toilets etc by metal objects.

My student lodger has obviously dropped something metal into the basin in my bathroom, which has left & mark & I'd be grateful if somebody could tell me what it is I need to ask for at the plumbers merchants that will get rid of this mark.

Somewhere in the recesses of my brain I feel that it's some kind of rubber, but don't want to sound a complete idiot when I go to the shop.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
