Washing machine not emptying

My MIL has had a washing machine for a couple of years but never used it as preferred to wash everything by hand. Anyway she now wants to use it, so I let some water run in to check there were no leaks when it emptied but it doesn't empty. It's spinning but the water isn't going out.
It's a second hand one but was working when it was put in.
I don't know if this has got anything to do with it but the water looked very dirty in the drum - could it be bunged up or something?

Hi, this sometimes happens to my washing machine, there is a sort of 'kick board' type thing at the front of my wm at the bottom, behind that is a big circular thingie (technical, I know) that you need to unscrew, water will drain from here and you would need to unplug whatever is blocking it. For me, it usually happens if I was my dogs blankets, it gets blocked with dog hair (euck!)
This always works for me (touch wood)0 -
I had this problem last week and replaced the washing machine pump.
The machine was just sitting there with water in the drum, it was spinning but not emptying.
I moved the machine and removed the waste outlet where it connects to the sink and put this into the washing up bowl, which was on the floor. This drained the machine. I then tipped it onto one side so that it was wedged against the kitchen units and I could lie down and get to the pump underneath.

When I removed the pump it fell to bits and so I had to get a brand new one from my local appliance repair shop.

My washer is an indesit and it was £25 for a new pump.
Works like a new one now0 -
