Drafty UPVC window

Options
Hey all

I know there are some threads about drafts etc so feel free to move this to join them.

I have moved into a rented 2 bed flat built 2006 which has UPVC windows. The flat is by the sea, there are other flats in front of mine before the sea separated from mine by the car park, but there are gaps between the buildings. When it is windy, the wind really howls around the buildings and I've noticed that the 2 bedrooms (sea facing) can get drafty . The main bedroom has a large window (6ft wide by 4ft high) with a small tilt and turn window (2x2ft approx). The draft seems to come through the tilt and turn window frame even though it is sealed tightly shut. There are blinds on the window but no curtains.

How can I fabricated some sort of draft excluder thingy to keep draft out? Or does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do?

I can't really attach anything permanently as it's rented. I have limited sewing ability but willing to give anything a go!

TIA

  • I have this problem with upvc windows as well. I put bubble wrap attached to velcro on them in the winter plus heavy curtains. Warm front say that you cant draught proof upv windows ????????? surely there must be a way

    Hi FlutterbyUK,

As your thread has dropped from the front page of the Old Style board I've moved it over to the In My Home board to see if the regulars there have any more suggestions.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

A friend had a problem with draughty UPVC windows. The hinges on all his side-hung windows had sagged, meaning the window didn't align correctly when shut. The hinges look like these: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/71795/Ironmongery/Hinges/Friction-Hinges/Friction-Hinge-Top-Hung-300-x-17mm-Pack-of-2. As the window closes a small bit is supposed to feed into a guide at the end of the rail (bottom in that picture). Due to the sagging, it missed and the window didn't pull shut properly.

If this is the case (watch the hinge at the top and bottom as you shut the window), the job is easy to do, as long as the windows aren't too big (and thus heavy!). It took me and my friend a couple of hours to replace all the hinges in his house. It made an immediate difference to the temperature and noise in the house.

you can buy sponge strips that fill up the gaps from any hardware store.

Good curtains make a big difference to draughts and noise.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
