If you were flying to Heraklion airport Crete, where would you choose to stay?

Looking at booking our flights and own accommodation, have read lots about different resorts within a reasonable distance of the airport but wondered if anyone had a place they really recommend?

Thanks :money:

    Hi jem

Are you dead set on Crete and are you travelling soon? Noticed your other post on prob finding cheap flights to and from Crete and you'll need to cost in transfers too.

If you're flexible on destination, Thomson have some cheap late deal packges to Corfu from BHX atm. Less planning hassle too!

    Crete is really nice.

Have you looked at a map of the resorts 50 miles east & west of the airport?
Maybe you should see if there are any "sights" (Knossos, the Gorge, etc) you want to see & see what way they bring you.

I've been to Gouves. Worst holiday ever. Did all the "sights" which took a couple of days and then had to amuse ourselves for the rest of the fortnight in a place with less atmosphere than Bournemouth.

    Wouldn't do Crete again.

Thanks for the replies. Been to Corfu and wanted to try some where different.

Have booked flights to HER now and thinking of Elounda or somewhere close to there. Will have to see what it would cost is a taxi as will be booking own transfers.

Thanks, so looking forward to getting away :T

but you have to be careful as a lot of accommodation is up in a mountain village near Hersonisis - check how far from the town it is - you are well positioned for Knossos which is awesome and the capital. Had a wonderful Greek night in Crete - I loved it - drove to Agios Nikolas but could not get parked, but it's a fab island
    Titch :)

    Thank you for the replies.

So far thinking Gouves, Elounda or Agios Nikolaos. Hope to find a bargain. :T

I love Crete, especially the south of the island - smaller villages, friendly, low key (Agia Galini; Plakias); consider walking the Samaria Gorge if you like that kind of thing. I'd suggest getting a car and exploring - we haven't ever found a problem getting good value for money on accommodation there, getting better rates by turning up and asking for their best deal than by pre-booking.

Have you thought about posting your question on this forum? There'll be plenty of people with info and advice on there who will help, who know a lot about Crete:

I'd also suggest having a look in your local library to see if they've got a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide on the island you can borrow for a browse - what we might suggest may not appeal to you, but there you will be able to make up your own mind.

There are good coach connections from Heraklion airport - depending on time of arrival, of course. Ag Nik would be direct but you would need to change there for Elounda.
