upgrading to win 7 from vista

Hi. I see quite a few computers offerng a free upgrade to vista from vista home premium. Do all vista premium machines automatically upgradable or only when explicitely mentioned by the seller? (I suspect the latter). What sort of spec machine should I be looking to get to run the 64 bit version of win 7?
:D

Vista wont upgrade to 7 (if you can call it an upgrade) unless you made a purchase with that promise from a retailer.

As for spec - probably Pentimum 4 3.0Ghz with 2gig memory as a minimum I would have thought.

Updated my vista ultimate to win 7 trial - hated it and removed quickly. I will wait till the next version after win 7.

you can get a full upgrade version(not the one every ones been getting it's the proper upgrade ,not full version at upgrade prices) after the 1st of September ,thats what the rummors are and a family pack in the UK for a limited time
and the beta downloads stop on the 20th august

    win 7 system requirements
    • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    • 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
    • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
so basicly any modern desktop pc will run win 7 64 bit
[STRIKE]i did not say netbook or laptop before you say[/STRIKE]

agreed, i have a tablet with dual 1.2ghz processors, a 1.8" slow hard disk, intel graphics and 2 gigs of ram. Its running win 7 ultimate and is smoking fast, even increased my battery life 30 mins.

as you can imagine this is a tablet not a gaming rig but apart from only getting 10megs a sec out the disk it seems just as responsive as a desktop.

I run win7 on a dual core 2 1.8ghz pc (2gb ram) and a Dell laptop 1.6ghz AMD (2gb ram) and it runs much better than vista does

This is 64bt version and is the trial 7100 build
  • thanks for your comments guys. So to run 64bit I need to look for 64bit processors - the fact that the computer comes with an upgradable window vista premium 32bit doesn't prevent running win 7 64 bit?

i don't even know the diff between win 7 32 bit and 64 bit, I just want to get a decent machine for once and that sounds good!

Yes you need a 64bit processor, most modern cpus are now but best to check before hand

You dont need 64bit OS though, they may be odd issue with old legacy hardware but haven't found anything as yet

I think Microsoft should give all vista owners a free upgrade cause Vista is a total Lada.

Agreed it is a flop. Just like windows me was

Windows 7 may look the same but it is a lot quicker not far off winxp
