Looking for some help

I have my gas on a meter from edf, a few weeks ago the water board flooded the gas mains where i live & i was with out gas for 7 days. When the gas men came to repair my meter,They said as it was a new meter, it may not work properly after been wet, Well it was ok for about a 5 days ,Then one morning i woke up,There was no gas,I rang edf & they sent some one out, Who said he could put gas on, Put he could not change meter,As natinol grid didnt own it,So he fixed it,I got up next morning and no gas,Again they came put gas on,but would not change meter. The next day,Again there is no gas, so after ringing edf,I got so frustrated i burst in to tears on phone,Well this did the trick, all of a sudden he could come change the meter,As there was £42 on my old meter ,The man just added the credit to the new meter & told me to ring for a new card,As the old one would not work,I did this and it arrived at begining of this week,When the card arrived i put it in meter & followed all instructions,But the card would not work,I rang edf straight away & got a very rude lady who told me to ring back when i had no gas,I explained i was worried as bank holiday was coming up & i didnt want to be without gas then,But she told me,It onlytakes 4 hrs for someone to come out, when ever you ring (i did tell her that when they came out 3 days in a row, thequickest they came was 5 & half hrs & she more or less said i was lying) So today at 1pm,the gas runs out, I ring up to be told that my meter does not belong to them & the people who it belongs to, Will not be back at work till tuesday,So ring back then,I said this was not gd enough,But they say, thats all they can do, I have 2 daughters & we now have no cooking facilities or heating or hot water, Does any one know any person or organisation,I could get in touch with to see if i can get something done about this matter,I am very sorry this is such a long post,But i dont know where or who to turn to, Thanks in advance love kara

  • Hi kara,

There is a gas emergency number but I'm not sure if this is only for something like reporting a leak.

    http://www.energylinx.co.uk/emergency_contact_details.htm

Citizens Advice also have the following information if the problem cannot be resolved.

Hope this may be of some assistance

  • Thanks very much, but its only for emergencys, also as im the only person on the street who meter is not owned by natinol grid,Does anyone know if its possible to get natinal grid to take back my meter, as if they were looking after it, some one would have been able to come out yesterday, I am at end of my tether, with it all, It breaks constantly, i just want the natinal grid to take it on,so that if it breaks, some one will come out ( even on a week end) i rang this morning to ask about compensation because this is such a hassle( no hot water, no heating at all & no cooking facilites.as i dont own a microwave) and was told i dont qualify because its not there fault i have no gas,its the other company,Thou how can that be right, when i buy my gas from edf & not from the company who looks after the meter. I am babbling again, sorry about that,I just need some one to help me try get to bottom of this,Even if i cant get gas on before tuesday. I at least want natinal grid to take my meter back on,

the gas emergency service do not come out and wind on meters or put emergency credit on it, that is the responsibility of the gas supplier and edf do have a dedicated 24 hr number especially for customers with such meters,
EDF Energy Pay As You Go (prepayment meter) enquiries 0800 015 1733

National grid will not take ownership of your meter, it is owned by edf and they do not have a contract with national grid to replace for emergencies which is why it did not get replaced. British Gas is another company that for the most does not have such a contract so in event of emergency the engineer can only make safe and advise you to contact your supplier to get it dealt with,

Many gas companies appoint their own metering contractors such as enterprise or onstream to name but two to look after their meters,

  • hi lemon tart, i dont know if yr wrong or right, all i know is, when the meter broke this time, the woman on the phone at edf said that because natinal grid didnt own this meter its owned by eq europe (i think thats who she said) and they are not back at work till tuesday. there is nothing they can do,She also told me that she had tried there headquaters in germany,To see if there was any one in any area working over bank holiday week end & she could not get a answer there. I just feel that who ever owns the meter,is not really my problem, i buy my gas throu edf & i think that to leave my self and 2 kids with no hot water for washing or cleaning & no heating or cooking facilities, ( i dont own a microwave) for nearly 3 days is un acceptable, I pay my bills like any one else & 3 days is certainly feeling like a long time, If at work i sent some one to do my job & they didnt go,it would be on my toes. so surley the fact i buy my gas throu edf sholud mean they have a responsibilty to me and my kids. i pay for a service that surley they are meant to provide.
Also lemon tart ,thanks for the number that is one of many i have tried

I work for the gas emergency service and I know they are there on bank holidays and have taken calls from edf on bank holidays , you dial the number do not take any options and ignore the msgs and you should get through to their staff, and yes National Grid do not own all the meters - you were incorrectly advised by the lady at edf, - edf is one of only two companies that I know of that have a dedicated etm line or at least the only ones that make the number known. If the meter is broken down then the engineer they send has a 4 hr window in which to deal with it, I am not sure if that applies to putting emergency credit on the meter as I do not work in metering,

are they the codes that show on the mtrs? I do know that the standard of service for such call outs is 4 hrs but sadly due to pressure of work not always met

no thats not the codes, thats just the type of job that is raised by the MAM.

and yeah, 4 hours best endevours. usually get covered in that time.

also as well as edf, sse, bg all have 24 hour etm lines.

ah I see - I do not work in metering so not familiar with those terms., yep bg and edf only ones I know with dedicated 24 hr numbers unless of course someone knows different
