buying a suit

got the suit (black one £80 debenhams, 10% off plus another 10% for opening store card). now what shirt and tie (if needed?) would go well for a christening?
thanks everyone0 -
Stay away from white shirt, that would be too "funerally" seeing as you've gone for a black suit.
What colours suit you? I think a lilac shirt would be nice with black. Some men can get away with certain shades of pink but not all men like to wear that colour.
Some places sell shirt and tie sets so saving you the trouble of matching them up yourself.0 -
thanks, well i've just sorted out all the shirts i have (not many) and I have 1 plain white, one plain light blue, one plain cream/beige colour, and one light blue with a square pattern on it. i also have a tie with diagonal blue stripes.0

If you go around your local shopping centre, so many formal clothing shops have special offers on suits at the moment, especially with the current economic climate...0

He's got his suit now Vijay - he wants help with his shirt. If you're a snappy dresser perhaps you can suggest a colour to go with his black suit.
W2BM3 - if you don't want to buy a new shirt, then from the ones you've got I'd say the plain light blue and the tie with diagonal blue stripes. Don't put a striped tie with a checked shirt, not such a good look.
Or, do you have a local market? Ours does shirts in all sorts of colours for £5, that's where OH got his lilac one.0 -

I like to go for plain shirts with bold colours, all down to personal choice really!0 -
Although you have your suit now, I wanted to add for anyone else thinking of the same thing....
I would ALWAYS buy a machine washable suit if you intend to get a lot of use out of it. It can cost £10 a time to dry clean a suit which soon adds up. Washable suits will save a fortune and look quite nice now if you get them from the right places.
The other advice as above is one jacket, two pairs of trousers... in work my suit jacket sits on the coat stand all day but my trousers are in constant use... therefore dividing the wear between two pairs is recommended.0 -

how much do i need to spend?
my mate was saying his mum got him one from primark for £25 but is this false economy? am i better off with one from say burton or debenhams and spending about £100?
also i am a 5 foot 6 male so quite short so is there a certian style of suit that would suit me ? also is it best to stick to a plain black one?
If I can add my two pence in.
I have developed a habit of buying designer suits at TK Maxx or in sales at stores like Debenhams.
This way I can get £300 suits for about £100! (an absolute bargain in my eyes). What's more I have a retired tailor in the family who has suggested that I take my suit to a decent tailor/machinists store on the high street who generally do alterations cheaply. The result? A designer, made-to measure suit for about £110.00 which would ordinarily cost say £500 to £1,000 to purchase normally.
I have also seen desinger suits (i.e. Armani, etc) second hand on eBay at a good price and tailors who measure you up, send your measurements abroad and (I presume due to decreased labour costs) provide you with a made to measure suit. However, since I have never done any of these two options cannot advise on this.
