Same here - decided to be cheap last year and got a refurbished packard bell external from ebay (idiot I am) - blasted thing had problems from start, noisy and racketting. Soon realised where the bad sector was after a few months.

This month its kupt - its a maxtor inside.

On the look out for cheap internal Seagate drive (seeing as my pc already has seagate and is pretty quiet) - might get two stick one into the external enclosure and one into my pc.

why not just buy another internal 3.5 HDD and put it in the packard bell HDD? That will save you a bit of cash

    Oneaday, try a Samsung 1tb drive, http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/HardDrives-Internal/SATA500GBto1TB/Samsung/HD103UJ.html
I've got one of these. you talking quiet. I had to double check this was running. Almost silent running, ok its a sata, but i like it. fiind out what connection you have internally in the external case, if its sata, just replace the drive.
I've got 2 maxtors running in my computer and have had them over 5years now, never had a problem with either one.
saying that i also have a 10year old Fujitsu, which is still working perfectly as well. And i thrash my harddrives, what with defragging usually once a week. and virus scans, game playing,
Yes MAXTOR is now owned by SEAGATE, hence the reason i will never buy a maxtor,
seagate had a problem with their 1tb drives earlier this year due to a bad firmware on most of their drives. people buying them and 2days later having to send them back, as they where no longer working. just reading their forums about all the problems with those particular drives, as i was looking to buy a 1tb at the time, in 2 days they had 68 pages of complaints with around 28-30 posts per page. Think they fixed the problem now, but I'm staying well clear of seagate.
