best way to clean a carpet

Hi folks,
I'm about to redecorate the hallway and stairs and the stair carpet could do with a good clean. I'll be removing it so I can give it a thorough clean. Can anyone recommend any products or advise on the best way to go about it. If it needs to get wet it should be possible to dry out, as I can leave it out on a dry day. It's a caramel/dark cream woven kind of carpet and there are a few stains on the landing area.

thanks

Hmm with removing it i am not sure tbh but we have a cream one and i have tried every product apart from things like a vax/rug doctor etc..last wekk i used (and will prb get slated here!!) wet wipes..the crapet has come up so so much better than anything i have used..i used pretty much the whole packet but they have done a fab job imo.
Good luck sure someone will be on soon x

never thought of actually hiring a machine. What's the rough cost for a weekend and is it actually worth it.
