I have several XviD files (is this the same as .avi???) which I would like to transfer to disk to play on my DVD player.... can someone please recommend me any software to perform this conversion, that is free to get and quick to do the job?!

Hope someone can help,
Thanks in advance

I used Nero last time I needed to do this, but there may be other free software out there that can do it for you.

DVD Santa will convert any video file to DVD and burn the DVD at the end
  • http://www.videohelp.com/guides is a great resource for just about any conversion. But if you have a large number of files to convert you could consider buying an mpeg4 dvd player instead as they play discs with avi files without any need for converting and can now be had for as little as £20-30

To get the best results I find its best to encode the audio and video separately and then put them back together when authoring the dvd, however this takes a bit of time and uses several programs.

Try This Method if You Can Get Hold Of All The Software.

If you want to fit more than one file on a dvd in BitrateCalc press the advanced button and type in the desired individual file size.

If the audio is MP3 rather than AC3 you need to press the WAV button instead of the demux in VitrualDub and then you will need additional software to convert WAV to AC3.
    Like This.

I also use DVD Shrink to burn the disk instead of TMPGenc DVD Author but you need nero installed to use this.

But this is all probably long winded for you, but I've spent many hours trying to find the best method and these programs give the best results and works everytime. I've found many methods can result in the sound being out of sync and this can be quite frustrating.

Here's a guide for doing what you need http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm
Plus here's a list of tutorials for doing all sorts of things http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/
That said, it can take hours to convert files. I'm in the same position, I'm just gonna buy one of these http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/170874/art/iisonic/ii3016pu-dvd-divx-player.html

I've spent a long time getting to grips with all the various guides etc on videohelp and it all just proved too complicated & time consuming.

In the end, I stumbled across this application: http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

It used to be called divxtodvd but has now been renamed. Its just a point and forget tool. It does exactly what it says on the tin and is hassle free. The only downside was the menu's it created were a bit naff but then you can't have everything can you!

Personally I use a fantastic piece of FREE software called DIKO.

That converts your AVI to DVD compliant files (one video and one audio).

Then I use another piece of software, not sure if its free, think it might have a free version but there are shareware versions available. It is called DVDLab and I can make my own DVD Menu.

I just made myself a nice Malcolm in the Middle DVD since they can't be bothered to release them officially! I would say anything more than 6 hours worth of video is pushing it for one DVD.

If you're a newbie to all this, probably best to use the software in the post above, convert to dvd. Heard it is fairly good at what it does.
