Being charged Duty charges (should I not be?)

I am in an ongoing dispute with FedEX over a letter I received from them 1 week after my order from American arrived at my home in the UK. Basically they are charging me £44 tax (Duty, VAT and Admin fee) for my £106 order. The problem is, the invoice they taxed me on is for the wrong amount (overcharged by $47 USD). Anyway…

Just to update-
My husband called up a second time and spoke to someone else ... who actually waived the entire fee!! So they do have the power to waive it, but only if you get someone nice on the phone.
