Laptop wont load help please

My daughters Compaq psario laptop wont boot up although it powers up.
there is a message appears on screen saying to restore system ( i think ) but no option to do it.

It runs on win xp home

I tried with original disk to reformat and put on clean xp home but got a message when i got to format screen saying a load of numbers and letters then

setupdd.sys address F74DAE54 base at F74B2000 date stamp 41107C8F

i am not sure if this relates to some error in the bios. Ieven swapped hard drives to see if it was hard drive issue but NO same message appears.
I am not a computer wizz but generally find my way around them, but this has me baffled as all worked fine until the space bar came unclipped which i had a friend replace for me. ( this is how it came back after and i believe the original data on the hard drive is still intact )

Anyone of you wonderful techies any ideas on what i can do here ?? plz

There's a chance that this is related to a memory problem - did your friend need to disassemble the casing?

If so, he may not have replaced a memory module correctly. Sounds unlikely but it's actually quite easy to do on some makes. Try flipping it/them out and then re-installing, pressing fully back into the slot.

If you sure it's installed properly, it may be worth downloading Memtest and checking that the memory is working Ok.
  • In reply,

Yes the laptop was taken apart. to be honest the internal power pin broke away hence the friend took apart to solder another in, on return it worked fine but noticed the space bar was not fully back in situ so thats why i asked them to look at it again and they replaced the spacebar. From that point on the error screens are all you see system restore !!

Unfortunatley I am not that up on taking apart the compaq as it would appear you need to remove just about every screw even the one embedded below keyboard to be able to release the outer casing.

Anyone know of an easier way to check the memory modules or any guides on how to remove the casing I can follow that you may know of would be great.

    Thanks in advance

You won't need any serious dismantling to get at the memory modules.

I don't know that model of laptop, but I can type "Compaq Presario 2500 "service manual"" into Google and it points me straight at the service manual:

Looks like you just need item 30 on the diagram: "SDRAM door".

another thing to bear in mind, is that some laptops have 1 slot on the base of the machine and one under the keyboard.

And don't forget to also remove the battery while working on it!
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Cheers for that.
I removed the memory door as diagram and yes 2 modules there I then removed them and replaced back again securely but alass, when i booted up the laptop i was met with nothing more than a green message which ended system reload

Unable to prompt any command path to get past this I had to turn off yet again!!

Any ideas or am I still looking at a possible dead ram ?
