Npower threatening me with court action

Hello there,
I have a bit of a problem with Npower. I left a rented house in April of this year and closed my account via their online form as I didn't need to transfer them to my new property. I was up to date with my bills.
Today I get a letter through my door saying that they have had to trace me to my new address (which incidently costs me £7) and that I owe them £875.51. How can this be when I closed my account AND THEN PHONED THEM to ensure that my bill was completely clear?! This is the first time I have heard from them (let alone be threatened with court action) since April, they have both my phone number and my email address so why they couldn't contact me with any issues I have no idea.
What would you advise I do next? Should I phone or write to them? The complete irony is I'm about to move to a new property and would probably have gone back to them for my gas and electricity. They've got no chance now, I'm absolutely fuming!
Thanks

Is their end reading the same as your end reading?0

No, not at all. I just called and they say they have estimated the end reading and they have no record of me giving them the final reading or my calling.0

Sounds like they don't have a record of you calling to close your account and your account was closed when the new tenant moved in. As they did not have a forwarding address they will have had to track you down.
Make sure your account is being closed to the correct date (as it is probably being closed to the date of when the new occupier moved in), do you still have the final meter reading? If not does your agent or landlord have a note of it?
Once you have the final bill corrected you will then need to speak to them to arrange a suitable payment plan to avoid debt collection procedures.0 -
