cut through hedge cutters!!!

Hi i was hoping for some money saving advice

I was out cutting the hedges the other week and cut through the cord of my black and decker hedge cutters:mad::rolleyes:. I was bought another one today but as he was cutting part of the hedge he cut through the cord.

Now i have two useless hedge cutters (of the electrical sort!)

Is it possible for me to fix them myself?

I did try and get a quote to get them fixed but it would have cost around £30 whic is the cost of a new one.

The only positive thing out of this is that we wernt electricuted!"!

  • It is one of those things that is easy to do if you know what you're doing, but if you don't, I wouldn't attempt it. Get it wrong and you could end up killing someone!

Do you have any "repair" type shops nearby? I have one who repair hoovers etc but they may be able to replace the cord for you. It shouldn't cost as much as you have been quoted I wouldn't think.

Indeed it is easy to do if you know what you're doing. Could explain how to do it, but that's never good with such things as electrics as things can be misinterpreted etc.

OH seems to be of the opinion that it is like wiring a plug but i am not convinced. I know how to wire a plug but thats it.
I have told him to leave it and i will have to save for another one

  • When my friend's hoover cable needed replacing (it got caught under a door and wore through, exposing live wires) I think she paid about £10.

  • Actually, just had a thought. how far from the trimmer was the cut?

What your OH may be planning to do is just cut the cable and wire another plug on at that point, so you end up with a much shorter cable. Which would work I think. Provided you wire the plug properly.

Cant you just join the wires back using 3 connector blocks (about a £1 a strip) matching the colors together and wrap insulating tape around it? Next time wear the power cord over your shoulders round the back of your neck out of the wayof the cutter. ;)

That could be done but is a dangerous bodge job. The cable, depending on where the cut is, needs replacing.

Buy a 2 pole garden equipment plug http://www.screwfix.com/prods/16262/Electrical-Supplies/Cable-Accessories/Cable-Connectors/Rubber-Cable-Connector similar should be available from any garden centre. Cut the cable off about 30cm from the tool and fit the plug connector (the one with the two prongs on, you would be suprised how many people do it the other way round ). Fit the other end to the remaining cable if it is long enough. I do this whenever I buy a new tool with a long attatched cable that way I only have one cable to swap between all the tools and only one to wrap up after a long day in the garden.

When the op next cuts the cable (which seems quite probable :o) it is a simple fix ;)

personally, I wouldn't risk it. We've got a rechargeable set of hedgecutters. Does the job with our privet ans conifer hedging a treat, and no risk of electrocution.

PLEASE DONT ATTEMPT THIS< It can be done by a qualified Electrician but only as an emergency repair. Its very definitely a bodge to tide u over until it can be done
