Poor toilet flushing action

Options
Our toilet flush is woeful. Without being too graphic, half the time it doesn't flush all the contents away after the first flush. In fact, number twos often survive multiple flushes. A bit embarrassing when we have guests around!

Having watched it carefully no water comes out the left side, it all comes from the front right and a little from the back, so I'm guessing that's where the problem is.

I googled it and the "mostly American" sites recommended putting on some marigolds, getting a mirror and checking for blockages under the rim.

I've done this (with a torch!) and can't see anything significant.

The cistern fills up fully after flushing, so there's plenty of water in there. There's just no power to the flush.

Is there anything else I can do to improve the flush action?

its more likely that the bend is too narrow, rather than lack of water

    modern toilets dont like 'logs'

    invest in a stick!

Why would water only be flowing from one side of the bowl though? That's why I thought that there might be an issue somewhere.

There's just no power in the water flow at all.

again, modern toilets dont tend to have water flushing all around the bowl - is it a dual flush toilet?

does the cistern fully empty when you flush? if so, then theres not much you can do about where the water swills around the bowl, its just down to the toilet's design

No, just a standard "pull the handle and hope it does the job" type.

    Is the waste sealed tightly?

Does it drain the cistern when you flush? If it doesn't it may be dual flush. Dual flush has been universal for many years now. If yours is, then it's a change of flushing techniques.

It drains the cistern to around an inch, if not less.

I think this is a fairly old toilet to be honest, it was here when we moved in.
