Cheapest way I have found is with Speedferries. They charge £25 each way for car and passengers.

As for accommodation, Chambres d'Hotes are the best value. They are all over France, and you meet some lovely people.

Try Norfolk line ferry to Dunkerque. It really for lorry drivers short crossing free film & great road access to North & East France/Belg/Holland/Germany, which is really lovely & pretty under explored. The boat is spotless & Best of all is the price £19!!
I've driven from Birkenhead to Dover with plenty of stops in about 6 hours inc the M25, so its do-able from Lancs Good Luck

p.s if you leave at 2am (ish) you can be in Dover within about 4.5 hours.

We live in Cheshire and do it regularly in 4 hours door to door but like I say, very early in the morning.
