Noisy pipes

A few weeks ago our water pipes started banging loudly sometimes shortly after a tap was turned off or a toilet was flushed - it can be a while afterwards and the noise sounds a bit like a helicopter and can go on for about ten seconds. This started roughly about the same time when by using two showers at the same time, for too long, we ran the hot tank out of water which caused some air in the pipes until the hot water tank had refilled. Therefore I suspect the banging pipes has been caused by running the hot water tank out of water.

We've had an experienced plumber out to fix the problem. He changed the ball valve in the cold water tank. However, the problem continues...

Any ideas what we can try next? Without understanding the issue more myself I'd rather not pay a plumber to keep randomly trying things and charging us in the process.

try opening/closing the rising main stop tap, whilst running some sink taps.
sometimes gets rid of any air locks.
