Setting up pop account mail - help please

Hi,

I have been wondering about it for long enough and would now like to set up pop mail so i can get email from my other accounts.

I have a yahoo.co.uk email address and a hotmail.co.uk I would like to go into my main hotmail.com address.

I have posted what comes up in the set up for me, can someone tell me what should go in which box and what boxes should be ticked etc in LAYMANS terms (as I am just learning)

Thanks in advance

I'm not a 100% sure here but with the information you posted I don't think it will work for you as Hotmail uses HTTP mail protocol, which means you would have to use a program such as 'GetMail' to forward your mail for you.

But i'm sure someone will be along here soon to to put us both straight!

I hope I understand this correctly
You want to use a single web based email provider like hotmail or Yahoo to check a pop mailbox?
Both Yahoo and hotmail offer this service but I think I read somewhere that they are going to start charging for it $20 per year comes to mind in the case of hotmail.

I will explain the things you have posted above
POP Server Name: this depends of the provider of the mail account, btyahoo is mail.btinternet.com
POP User Name: the username is what you use to login to the mailserver, some require the email address others only reguire the bit before the @ sign
POP User Password: the password that goes with the username
Server Timeout (seconds): usually set to 60 seconds
Port Number: (Note: Standard port number is 110) port 110 is all you need to know
Leave messages on POP server (tick or no tick) up to you, if you leave them on the server you can check them again or if you have the account set up on a pc the pc will download them. removing the from the server will end up with them moving over in to hotmail/yahoo
Download new messages only (tick or no tick) this is an unusual option I asume it is if you use the leave messages on the server or it will only start from now moving email in to hotmail.

The other way I can see your question going is that you wish to use a pop mail client such as outlook express or outlook to download email from hotmail or yahoo. there are programs that allow you to see the webpage within outlook but it cant download them like a proper pop account it will look similar to outlook. This isnt an option with outlook express. it just stores your details and you have a folder that you go to and it shows the contents of the online account. It can take some work to get tham installed and working.

Thanks for taking the time out to explain things to me.

I don't know where the thanks button has gone ?!

Where do I find out the pop server name of yahoo and hotmail ?

They are not saying that they will charge anything just now for the service, so I could at least try it to see if it's any good first.

    Thank you

To enable pop access to yahoo you need to subscribe to Yahoo! Mail Plus
    the server addreses are
    POP3 Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
    SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

a program to allow access to yahoo without paying is YPOPs I have no idea how or if it is any good.

Again I am unsure if hotmail still offer pop access but the server addreses
    pop3 : pop3hot.com
    smtp : mx1.hotmail.com

Thanks, I will not bother subcribing to yahoo plus just for this feature as I am having problems with my account with them just now, it's not working (reason why i wish to pick up mail from hotmail acccount)

I will go and try the hotmail details now, thank you

The Post #1 Alison74 stated that she had a yahoo.co.uk account which will work with POP 3 access without subscribing to Yahoo Mail Plus.
