mamae - as long as seal is airtight you can use a couple of things cling film (see post above) waxed paper on top of chutney then metal lid (personally i dont like this one or fill jar to top then place larger peice of wax paper or baking parchment on top then secure with rubber band. after you done that you can pretty it up by using square or circles of fabric. or one of those paper doily thingys. secure these with rubber bands - nice if you are giving them away. dont forget to label them and put date bottled on them0

Well I hope my chutney will be ok. I just put it into pesto jars with nothing but the lids. I figured they would be ok. I too save jars all year. I can't belive the op buys things to throw away. Cant you use the jam to make a pudding or something?
I keep curry sauce jars 4p at sainsburys. Mayonaisse jars, we get through quite a bit of this and I can't be bothered to make it.
Ask on freecycle and let your friends know you want jars. Most people recycle them now.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I also re-use pasta sauce jars if they got wide necks - narrow neck ones not so good. a local greengrocers sells jars @ 3 for a pound which i had to take advantage of last year as was given 3 dozen eggs!!!!!!!!!! but - yes they can be investment - every one i gave pickled eggs to had strict instructions to return the jars - if they wanted more freebies!! and they did!
i use milton liquid to sterilise them and put a couple of layers of cling film under the lids - which you cant put in milton so i boil them for couple of mins
i just checked one jar i had left from last year - looks fine - no sign of mould or anything so that must work.
and yes they have to be dry before you put anything in them!!!!
Can I have the instructions for pickling eggs please. Do you have to use white vinegar? it is much more expensive than malt.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

certainly you can have recipe buxtonrabbitgreen
you need - eggs I have found that you can get 8 - 9 medium eggs in old large pickled onion jars
pickling vinegar - yes it does have to be white - i tried malt and the eggs went brown and no-one wanted them!
count your eggs and make sure you have enough jars!
sterilise jars - you can either boil them i think its about 10 minutes - stick them in very hot oven for 20 mins or (my method) use baby bottle steriliser for 10 mins place them upside down on clean cloth or kitchen roll to dry
now boil your eggs time them at 10 minutes from boiling.
drain then run cold water over them until theyve cooled a bit
when they feel about room temp peel them. I spread out newspaper on worktop then roll the egg about till all cracked then peel it.
fill the jars as you go with eggs
when all eggs gone and jars all full pour vinegar into jars until you reach the neck. ensure that the eggs are covered with vinegar - if not - top it up a bit.
i then place my cling wrap over about 4 layers ie i tear off about 10 inches and fold into squares.
secure with rubber band and replace lids put a label on with date bottled they will be ready to eat in about six weeks - the recipe i use says 3 weeks but i feel its not long enough - even though i have to hide them until they are ready!
ok? btw I dont buy the expensive pickling vinegar - most of the local greengrocers sell gallon plastic jugs of the stuff for about the same price as sarsons in supermarket - keep an eye out for them - cos most greengrocers will be starting to sell pickling onions about now0 -
I was wondering if it's ok to use coffee jars as we get through loads of them? The 200g Gold Blend and Douwe Egberts ones?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

you could barneysmom - if making small amounts
tbh - i tend to hoard large jars for my pickled eggs but i am happy to do pickled onions in these smaller size jars as we dont eat enough to justify doing huge jars of them.0 -
Try pattesons glass, the website is jarsandbottles-store . co . uk (sorry not allowed to post links yet) they sell in higher quantities so you get a better price, it works out for around 13p for a pickle jar with a lid0

buy smartprice/value whatever curry sauce
comes in a nice size jar and is 9p
(warning the sauce itself is vile, and resembles curry NOT)
it may have sat next to curry on a shelf once but thats it
i felt guilty throwing it away
with the 2 raisins that come in each jar
but its inedible0 -
Stick a wanted on freegle/freecycle, postcard in a shop window, freeads etc. You'll soon be inundated, you can say thanks by giving a jar of pickled beets when they're done.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0
