I have just bought a DVD recorder which has a Firewire
connection.
Does anyone know if I was to plug in an External Hard
Drive via the firewire, would the recorder read media
files (ie AVI) and play them on the TV.

if the external driver could play the files then yes, otherwise don't think so. EBay often has some media player type caddies that hold a hard drive but can play DIVX files etc.0

does the manual have anything init about the port? might mention things to be plugged in0

Thanks for the replies.
Had a look at the manual and I can't see anything about this.
This is the DVD spec/manual :

I would have thought that the firewire port is for connecting a Mini DV camcorder to the DVD recorder so you can download your videos.
According to the tech sheet its DV in only. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
